Security Professionals Must Learn Effective Leadership Skills to Gain the Respect They Deserve

Despite playing an instrumental role in protecting assets, property and people, many physical security professionals are not given the credit (or resources) they deserve from corporate leadership.

“What’s the biggest challenge facing security today?” asked Martin McNair, a security consultant, “respect.”

During an educational session at The Society of Industrial Security Professionals (NCMS) in Chicago on June 25, McNair gave an inspiring presentation called “Leadership in Security Management without Insanity.” He started the talk by taking a poll of attendees:

“How many of you are sick of hearing the phrase: Do more with less?” he asked as dozens of hands shot up in the air among audible groans and sighs. “It’s impossible, it’s absolutely insane. How can we do it without going crazy?” he asked.

The answer, he suggested, is to build respect, both as an individual and collectively as a profession. Security professionals must show strong leadership skills in order to convince corporate executives that doing more with less is not in the best interest of anyone.
