(Wall Street Journal) Islamic State has taken responsibility for Sunday’s shooting at an art fair in Texas that featured cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, the first time the extremist group has claimed an attack on U.S. soil.
In a radio broadcast on Tuesday, the group said two of its “soldiers” carried out the attack in Garland, Texas. The claim to be behind the shooting, broadcast by the organization’s official station in Iraq, couldn’t be independently confirmed.
Islamic State has frequently called on supporters abroad who can’t join the group in Syria and Iraq to carry out attacks in their home countries. Armed assaults in Canada and Australia in the past eight months are believed by authorities to fall into this category of so-called lone wolf attacks.
The gunmen in Texas, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, were shot dead by police after they opened fire on an unarmed security officer at the fair in Garland, a Dallas suburb.
“This fair was conducting a competition of offensive cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. The brothers were killed during an exchange of fire, and we ask God to welcome them into heaven,” Islamic State’s radio broadcast said. “And we say to America. that what is coming is worse and more bitter, and you will see from the soldiers of Islamic State what ill will come.” . . .
